Hace unos meses publicamos en nuestra sección de Introducing… un artículo sobre Samuel S. Parkes. Una banda que estaba dando mucho que hablar en el Reino Unido y que apostaban por recuperar el espíritu del northern soul desde la ciudad de Leeds. El texto tuvo una gran acogida y como el grupo gustó dentro de nuestra parroquia de fieles seguidores de Condenado Fanzine nos pusimos en contacto con la banda para ver si querían hacer una entrevista ahora que se aproximaba el momento del estreno de su debut. Su primera referencia, el 7″ Lock & Key, fue editada a mediados de mayo por Time For Action Records, sello que recientemente también ha publicado el primer LP de los franceses The Gift así como el debut de los ingleses Weeks.

¿Puedes presentar la banda y dar una breve introducción y cómo Samuel S. Parkes se formó?
Samuel S. Parkes comenzó como un proyecto en solitario y rápidamente se convirtió en un colectivo de músicos establecidos en Yorkshire. El proyecto ahora está construido alrededor de un núcleo compuesto por:
Samuel S. Parkes a la guitarra / vocal
Rachel Mary Shaw – Coros / Bailarina de northern soul
Callum Sammon – Percusión / Danzante de de northern soul
Josh Edge – Bajo
El grupo fue formado en 2014, la banda se estableció rápidamente en la escena de música en directo, tocando en los festivales del Reino Unido: Isle of Wight (2015/2016) y Leeds & Reading (2015) y varios tours por el Reino Unido con bandas como Ocean Colour Scene, The Rifles, Jocelyn Brown y la legendaria Martha Reeves.
¿Tuvo (o tus compañeros de banda) en alguna banda anterior?
Toqué en una banda que formé en el instituto, fue una parte importante para crecer en la composición y para encontrar mi propio estilo, Josh también tocaba en una banda con su hermano. Es una historia divertida, aunque no conocí a Josh hasta 2014, él ya había estado en uno de los conciertos de una de mis bandas en 2009 … Hay pruebas fotográficas, un mundo pequeño.
¿Estás (o tus compañeros de banda) actualmente tocando en otra banda? ¿Algún proyecto paralelo?
No, estamos comprometidos con la visión que compartimos como banda, nos divertimos mucho tocando el tipo de shows que hacemos, así que no hay hambre para buscar otras vías.
¿Cuáles son las principales influencias en la música de Samuel S Parkes?
Nos gusta pensar que estamos influenciados por el soul en forma de 45’s. Single tras single, no una canción progresiva de 10 minutos o un LP lleno de rellenos. Breve y elegante música soul.
La gente tiende a describir a Samuel S. Parkes como una banda de soul del norte, ¿estás de acuerdo? ¿Sientes que perteneces a esta escena musical?
Nuestras raíces están en el northern soul debido al tempo y el ritmo potente, pero también tomamos prestado de otros géneros de música soul. Nos gusta llamarlo New Northern.
¿Qué es #NewNorthern? ¿Nos puedes explicar este concepto?
New Northern se trata de un movimiento basado en las raíces de la música. Dirigimos una residencia nocturna de new northern llamada Brudenell Soul Club, en el famoso Brudenell Social Club de Leeds. La idea gira en torno a los viejos amantes del soul que se unen con una generación más joven, que descubre el soul por primera vez, ninguna animosidad hacia los niños que no saben bailar o que no saben qué cada canción que está sonando. Nuestros Dj’s pinchan lo que quieren, northern soul, R & B, Motown, mod, reggae, ska, rocksteady, … ésa es la idea. Nuestros Djs invitados han incluido a Eddie Piller (Acid Jazz Records) y Dave Evison (Wigan Casino). Es una plataforma para nuestra música.
Otro de los puntos fuertes de Samuel S. Parkes es su puesta en escena. ¿Qué van a encontrar las personas cuando van a un concierto de Samuel S. Parkes?
Nuestros danzantes de northern soul rompen con la barrera que hay entre el escenario y el público, si escuchas música soul y no sientes ganas de moverte, hay algo desconectado en tu interior.
¿Qué significó para ti compartir el escenario con Martha Reeves?
Cuando tocamos por primera vez con Martha en York, Reino Unido, fuimos invitados a rezar con ella misma y la banda antes de la prueba de sonido. No soy un hombre religioso, pero sentí que tenía a alguien para agradecer por la situación en la que nos encontramos! Martha era una delicia para tocar y para llevarse bien con ella. Estábamos on fire esa noche y como consecuencia nos pidieron tocar algunas fechas más en la gira. Esto ha continuado siempre que ha vuelto al Reino Unido, lo cuál es un honor.
Samuel S. Parkes ha recibido excelentes críticas por sus actuaciones en directo, ¿os gusta más tocar en directo que grabar nuevas canciones?
Hemos prosperado gracias a nuestros directos porque tenemos un complemento visual al sonido y conectamos con la gente que viene a vernos tocar. La composición también es importante, visitar Abbey Road para grabar el nuevo single fue un sueño para nosotros y los resultados son fantásticos. Escuchar en vinilo «Lock & Key» por primera vez fue algo especial.
Su primer single está a punto de salir a la calle, ¿qué podría decirme acerca del proceso de composición y grabación de «Lock & Key» / «Let Me Go»?
Como he dicho anteriormente, hicimos una sesión de grabación y masterización en los estudios Abbey Road, Londres; así como otra sesión en Yorkshire con nuestro amigo y productor Ed Heaton. La composición nos ha costado aproximadamente un año y algunas versiones demo antes de entrar en el estudio para registrar la versión final. Soy un firme creyente que debes dejar que la canción crezca y no apresurarse en la grabación y publicación. No estaría feliz escuchando una grabación años después si me preguntase sobre si debería haber hecho algo diferente. Calidad no cantidad.
Una vez compuesta «Let me Go», tuve la idea de componer una canción basada en Dementia, cogí la guitarra acústica y escribí la base «Lock & Key» así como la letra completa. Entonces, entre Josh y yo construimos la versión de la canción que puedes oír hoy.
¿Dentro de la escena northern soul se solía lanzar canciones en formato single (7 «), ¿Samuel S. Parkes lanzará un álbum completo en el futuro o prefieres continuar lanzando singles en un formato de 7»?
Nos encantaría un día producir un LP, sin embargo, el formato de 7 «nos encaja mejor ahora. Tal vez cuando más gente nos escuche les daremos un álbum completo!
¿Habrá gira en 2017? ¿Sólo en Reino Unido?
Estaremos de gira hacia finales de 2017, esto incluirá una visita a Alemania y posiblemente a España.
Para una banda que cuenta tan sólo un 7″ publicado como es el caso de Samuel S. Parkes, ¿es difícil conseguir conciertos o planificar una gira?
Nos las arreglamos para tocar en grandes festivales del Reino Unido sin tener nada publicado, nunca hemos luchado por conseguir buenos conciertos debido al show que hacemos en vivo, vale la pena apostar por nosotros.
¿Cuáles son los planes de la banda para el resto de 2017?
La banda estará de vuelta en el estudio para comenzar la grabación de nuestro próximo lanzamiento así como anunciaremos varios shows.

Could you introduce the band? Could you give a brief introduction to the band and how Samuel S Parkes was formed?
Samuel S. Parkes started as a solo project & quickly became a collective of Yorkshire based musicians, now built around a core of:

Formed in 2014, the band quickly established ourselves on the live scene, playing Major UK festivals (Isle of Wight 2015/2016, Leeds & Reading 2015) & UK tours with Ocean Colour Scene, The Rifles, Jocelyn Brown, & Motown Legend Martha Reeves & the Vandellas.
Did you (or your bandmates) play in any previous band?
I played in a band that I formed at school, it was part of growing into songwriting & finding my own style, Josh also played in a band with his brother. Funny story, although I didn’t meet josh until 2014, he was at one of my old bands gigs in 2009… there’s photographic evidence, small world.
Are you (or your bandmates) currently playing in another band? Any side-projects?
No, we are committed to the vision we share as a band, we have a lot of fun playing the kinds of shows that we do, so there’s no hunger to pursue any other avenues.
What are the main influences on Samuel S Parkes music?
We like to think we are influenced by soul 45’s. single after single, not a 10 minute progressive tune or an LP full of fillers. short, sharp soul music.
People tend to describe Samuel S. Parkes like a northern soul band, do you agree? Do you feel that you belong to this musical scene?
Our roots are in Northern soul due to the uptempo rhythm & harder edge but we lend our self to a few soul based genres. We like to call it New Northern.
What is #NewNorthern?
New Northern is all about a movement based around roots music. We run a New Northern night called Brudenell Soul Club @ the famous Brudenell Social Club – Leeds. This is based around older soul lovers coming together with a younger generation discovering soul for the first time, no animosity towards the kids who don’t know how to dance or that don’t know every song that is playing. Our Dj’s play what they want to play, northern, R&B, Motown, Mod, Reggae, Ska, Rock Steady.. you get the idea. Guest dj»s have included Eddie Piller (Acid Jazz Records) & Dave Evison (Wigan Casino). it’s a platform for our music.
What are people going to find when they go to a Samuel S. Parkes’ gig?
Our Northern soul dancing instrumentalists break the barrier between the stage & the crowd, if you listen to soul music & don’t feel like moving, there’s something disconnected inside you.
What did it mean for you to share the stage with Martha Reeves?
When we first played with Martha in York, we were invited to pray with the lady herself & the band before soundcheck.. i’m not a religious man but I felt I had someone to thank for the situation we found ourselves in! Martha was a delight to play with & to get along with. We were on fire that night & as a result we were asked to play a few more upcoming dates on the tour. This has continued whenever the ladies come back to the UK which is a privilege.
Samuel S. Parkes have received great reviews for their live performance, Do you prefer to perform live than to record new singles?
We thrive on the live performance because we have a visual to compliment the sound & we connect with the people we play for. Creating is also important, visiting abbey road for a session on the new single was a dream for us & the results are fantastic. Hearing the Lock & Key on vinyl for the first time was special.
Your first single is about to hit the streets, what could you tell me about the «Lock & Key»/»Let Me Go» writing and recording process?
As previously mentioned, We did a session & mastering at Abbey Road Studios – London for this record, as well as a session in Yorkshire with our friend & long time producer Ed Heaton. Writing had come roughly a year & a few demo versions before going into the studio for the final version. I’m a firm believer that you should let the song grow & not rush into recording & releasing. I would not be happy listening to a recording years later & wondering if I should have done something differently. Quality not quantity.
I had «Let me Go» written & I had an idea for a song based on Dementia, I took to the acoustic guitar & wrote the basis «Lock & Key» & the complete lyrics. Myself & Josh then constructed the song to the version you hear today.
The northern soul used to release songs in singles format (7 «), Will Samuel S. Parkes release a full-album in the future or do you prefer to carry on releasing singles in a 7” format?
We would love to one day produce an LP, however the 7″ format suits us better currently, maybe when more people are listening we will give them an album!
Will there be a tour in 2017? Only in UK?
We will be on tour towards the end of 2017, this will include a visit to Germany & possibly Spain.
For a band with only a 7” released as Samuel S. Parkes are, Is it hard to get gigs or to plan a tour?
We managed to play major festivals in the UK without a physical release, we have never struggled for good shows due to our live show, we are worth taking a punt on.
