Cherry Red prepara otro box set relacionado con el punk. En este caso consistirá en 3 cds que se van a poner a la venta el próximo 28 de junio bajo el título de 1977 – The Year Punk Broke. Ésta va a ser la primera de una serie de compilaciones relacionadas con 1977 y el punk británico. 1977 – The Year Punk Broke sigue la estela del éxito marcado por otro box set: Action, Time, Vision (2016), que compiló a bandas que estaban en sellos independientes.
A pesar de que es en 1976 cuando el punk comienza en el Reino Unido, muy pocos singles y discos fueron editados en ese año. Sin embargo, en 1977 se produjeron los lanzamientos importantes, así como el nacimiento de una red emergente y autosuficiente de clubes, bandas, fanzines, sellos independientes y distribuidores que crearon una oleada incontenible que revolucionaría la música del Reino Unido y tendría un impacto duradero en la cultura musical popular.
El box set refleja cómo se desarrolló una escena emocionante y controvertida durante esos tumultuosos 12 meses. Se incluyen muchos de los principales lanzamientos del año y los favoritos de culto, incluidos The Jam, The Damned, The Boomtown Rats, Buzzcocks, The Stranglers, Generation X, Sham 69, The Only Ones, The Rezillos, Ultravox!, 999, X- Ray Spex, ATV, The Boys y The Vibrators.
En este lanzamiento también se incluyen éxitos de bandas previas a la explosión punk pero que fueron muy influyentes sobre ella: Doctors Of Madness, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Deaf School, The Tyla Gang, Graham Parker & The Rumour, The Gorillas, The Count Bishops, Radio Stars, Spider y Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias.
En 1977 – The Year Punk Broke también se incluye a c y The Heartbreakers, la banda de Johnny Thunders que grabó en Londres durante este periodo. También están presentes algunas rarezas y singles oscuros del indie punk. El lanzamiento incluye un folleto lleno de ilustraciones, con una anotaciones con más de 15,000 palabras y biografías de cada una de las bandas por parte del compilador David Wells.
