Si os decimos que Razor Stomp de Suede Razors es uno de los trabajos discográficos de este 2017 que más no ha gustado, no te estamos contando nada nuevo ya que seguramente leíste la reseña de este miniLP de la formación Californiana. Como sus anteriores entregas en forma de preciados 7” también nos congratulan, decidimos ponernos en contacto con el grupo de la Bay Area para realizar una entrevista por correo electrónico que tan amablemente han respondido e, incluso, nos han ido detallado paso a paso el estado en el que se encontraban las respuestas. Ni el mejor de los servicios de atención hubiera prestado un mejor seguimiento, incluyendo la visita a Europa de Mike Longshot con Victory.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): ¿Podrías primero presentarte, al resto de Suede Razors y quién está en otros grupos además de en Suede Razors?

Suede Razors: Darrel (Vocalista) se encuentra actualmente en Harrington Saints; Bryan (Guitarra) se encuentra en Hounds & Harlots; Mike (Bajista) está en Sydney Ducks y previamente en Emergency y Subway Thugs. Suede Razors: Skinhead Rock N Roll / Bovver Rock. Hay un montón de bandas que han infundido nuestro sonido, la mayoría de ellas son de los años 60 y 70. Nuestras influencias van desde bandas como The Who y Faces, hasta bandas glam rock como Slade y Jook, bandas de rock australianas como AC / DC, Rose Tattoo y Colored Balls. Y con nuestros antecedentes, es natural que bandas como Cock Sparrer, Slaughter & The Dogs y The Business se cuelan también!

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Supongo que hay algún significado detrás del nombre de la banda …

Suede Razors: Es una yuxtaposición de algo suave y sofisticado con algo duro y peligroso.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Suede Razors han publicado cinco singles (7 «) en los últimos años, en 2017 ha lanzado un miniLP con 6 pistas. ¿Hay un plan para un disco completo en 2018?

Suede Razors: Debido a nuestros horarios, otras bandas, etc … el proceso de escribir dos canciones y entrar el estudio por un día es la razón por la que el formato 7” funciona tan bien para nosotros. Sin embargo, nuestros fans han estado pidiendo durante mucho tiempo un LP completo y queríamos contentarlos con algo intermedio. Por lo tanto, no hay un plan para un LP en 2018, por desgracia, pero estamos planeando otro lanzamiento.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Supongo que «Passion on the Pitch» es una canción sobre fútbol, ​​¿La popularidad del fútbol es cada vez mayor en los Estados Unidos? ¿Puedes seguir las principales ligas europeas o la Liga de Campeones por televisión?

Suede Razors: No, porque cuando estuvimos por última vez en Europa la carrera presidencial no había comenzado. Sin embargo, en los dos últimos años Mike ha estado de gira con otras bandas y sí, la gente por todo el mundo le pregunta acerca de cómo los EE.UU. ha elegido a Trump y parecen estar en shock sobre cómo esto ha sucedido, igual que todos nosotros!

Condenado Fanzine (CF):  Could you first of all introduce yourself, the rest of Suede Razors and who is in which band besides Suede Razors?

Darrell (Vocals) is currently in Harrington Saints, Bryan (Guitar) is in Hounds & Harlots, Mike (Bass) is in Sydney Ducks and previously Emergency and Subway Thugs. Eric (Drums) is not currently in any other bands but was previously in The Bootboys from Los Angeles who appeared on the US of Oi! Comp (Link Records).

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Where and how did the idea for Suede Razors start?

Mike, Bryan, and Darrel were interested in trying out a new project that creatively deviated from their other bands.  In the Spring of 2013 we started to get together with Eric, mostly playing covers and to see if there was any chemistry amongst us. We started the band with little expectations but it quickly escalated into writing original songs and hitting the studio, which lead to our first release «Here She Comes b/w Longshot Kid.«

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Is Suede Razors a side-project or a full-time project?

We’ve definitely evolved from a side project to more or less a full fledged band, but to some degree we sit in the middle between the two. Sydney Ducks and Hounds & Harlots have not been very active in recent years so Suede Razors is the band that takes priority for Mike, Bryan, and Eric. Darrel is still very active with Harrington Saints, so Suede Razors does take a second seat in regards to their schedule. Also, each of us are quite busy in general, two of the guys have families, Mike now lives in Portland, OR, and travels a lot, so this puts some limitations on how much we play out, as well as our writing and recording process.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Playing in other bands, Do these other band obligations limit your band ambitions and time for practise, writing or playing?

To some degree, yes, but it is also a mixture of everyone’s lives outside of music that put limitations on practice, writing, and playing/touring as well. But in regards to our other bands specifically, of course. For example if Harrington Saints are recording, doing weekenders, and a European tour…that is a lot throughout the year that takes precedence. However, as I said before, we had no expectations with this band, so it is really cool that we have gotten the positive response from fans and that we’ve accomplished as much as we have.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): What would you say influenced Suede Razors?

The international scene has gotten really big in recent years and has also become diverse in that a lot of people are interested in hearing more than just Oi! and reggae. We saw an opportunity to start a skinhead rock n roll band…playing music that we all loved, without  musically stepping on the toes of our other bands.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): If you had to describe your band to someone who has not heard it before, how would you say it?

Skinhead Rock N Roll / Bovver Rock. There’s a lot of bands that have infused our sound most of which are from the 60s and 70s. Our influences range from bands like The Who and Faces, to glam rock bands such as Slade and Jook, to Aussie rock bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, and Coloured Balls. And with our backgrounds, it’s only natural that bands like Cock Sparrer, Slaughter & The Dogs, and The Business slip in there too!

Condenado Fanzine (CF): I guess there’s some meaning behind the band’s name…

It’s a juxtaposition of something smooth and sophisticated, with something hard and dangerous.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Suede Razors had published five singles (7”) in the last years, in 2017 you have released a miniLP with 6 tracks. Is there a plan for a full-length in 2018?

Because of our schedules, other bands, etc…the process of writing two songs and hitting the studio for a day is the reason why the 7” format works so well for us. However, our fans have been asking for a full length for quite some time and we wanted to meet them somewhere in the middle. So, there is no plan for a proper full length in 2018 unfortunately, but we are planning another release.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): I guess “Passion on the Pitch” is a song about football/soccer, the popularity of soccer is getting bigger in the United States? Can you follow the main european leagues or Champions League by TV?

Definitely!  In the past few years, it is easy to follow the Champions League and Europa League as well.  It is also possible to follow all of the bigger European leagues like the Premier League of course, but also Bundesleague, La Liga and Serie A especially. 

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Do you have (or your bandmates) any favorite football/soccer team?

Mike is probably the most fanatical about football, but it is something that interests us all.  Mike discovered Arsenal while living in North London in the 90s, and Darrel is a big West Ham fan.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Will there be a European tour in 2018? Any chances to visit Spain?

We definitely want to come back to Europe in 2018!! And yes, it would be great if we could visit Spain!!

Condenado Fanzine (CF): On your last tour in Europe, have you guys been asked a lot about Trump? Do you think that the international opinion about US has changed after his election as the president of USA?

No, because when we were last in Europe, the run for president had not begun. However in the past 2 years Mike has been on tour with other bands and yes…  people world-wide do ask about how the USA elected Trump and seem to be in shock about how this has happened, as are all of us!

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Mike, you also run Longshot Records since 1994. Do you have any interesting new releases scheduled yet?

There are always SO many good new bands these days that it is hard to keep up…  But Longshot Music has many good partnerships with labels in Europe like Contra Records, Rebellion Records and Randale Records that all work together to release great records from bands like Marching Orders, 45 Adapters, Legion 76, Victory, Bishops Green, etc.  Most recently the new Victory debut LP has been released by Longshot & Rebellion and there are more great releases planned like a 7” EP from Junto, a new full-length from Rude Pride, a new full-length from Concrete Elite, etc.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): How is the Bay Area oi!/punk/streetpunk scene these days?

We still have a pretty good scene here, especially in comparison to other parts of the USA, but it has definitely died down a bit in the past few years. Six years ago our scene got really big for a moment, something that we hadn’t seen around here in years.

Condenado Fanzine (CF): Any new or young interesting oi!/punk band coming from Bay Area?

There haven’t been any new bands in recent years and that adds a little to the «lull» we have hit recently. But keep your eyes peeled for new Oi! music coming from the Bay Area at the end of the year 😉
