Hace unos meses, ojeando el blog Just Some Punk Rock Songs, vi una entrada en la que hablaban de un grupo llamado Scandal. La banda presentaba la curiosidad de ser un grupo que años atrás nació en Rumanía y que se había vuelto a la actividad en Londres. Atraídos por su inusual procedencia y, sobre todo, por las canciones que oímos tanto en YouTube como en Bandcamp nos pusimos en contacto con la banda para hacer una entrevista por correo electrónico que nos permita tanto preparar este artículo para la sección #UnderTheRadar como jugar un poco con Indesign para preparar una versión maquetada y digital, como un fanzine o revista de toda la vida.

Scandal es una banda de street punk formada en 1998 en la ciudad de Bacau, Rumanía, por Vlad, Gabi, Crima y Dinu.  Por aquel entonces eran cuatro adolescentes punks que siempre estaban metidos en jaleos, bebían mucho, peleaban y también tuvieron sus problemas con las autoridades. Por ello, el cuarteto decidió adoptar Scandal como el nombre de la banda ya que reflejaba a la perfección su estilo de vida en aquellos años.

Este proyecto de Scandal captura influencias tanto procedentes de la escena punk británica como de bandas procedentes de la esfera musical de Estados Unidos. Entre los grupos que han marcado al cuarteto se pueden citar grandes referencias de la música punk rock como es el caso The Vibrators, Cock Sparrer, The Business, Social Distortion, Rancid u Oxymoron.

Hace unos años, dos de los miembros de la banda decidieron mudarse a Londres para buscarse la vida. «En un principio vinimos  a Londres por trabajo. Ya antes de que saliéramos de Rumania, Scandal estaba en un descanso así que no estábamos seguros de cuándo o si volveríamos a tocar juntos. De alguna manera conseguimos poner la banda en marcha de nuevo y creo que es la mejor decisión que hemos tomado nunca«, nos comenta Vlad.

En esta vuelta a la actividad, Scandal ha reformado su formación. El vocalista Gabi y el bajista Vlad son los dos miembros originales que continúan en el seno de Scandal, añadiendo a un viejo compañero de fatigas en Rumanía: Gigi. Hace 10 años, el batería ya se unión a la banda cuando estaba actuaba en Rumanía y realizó «bastantes actuaciones con nosotros» antes de que el grupo se mudara a la ciudad inglesa.

La novedad llega en la figura de Andy Madway, guitarrista griego que militó en las filas de Omixlh, mítica formación de punk/oi! procedente de Salónica; así como con el grupo ateniense de street punk, Bootstroke. No es el único miembro de Scandal que ha tenido otras bandas en el pasado. Gabi tocó durante un tiempo en Terror Art, considerada como la mejor banda rumana de punk/new wave; mientras que Vlad hacía lo propio en Manifest!, un proyecto de Oi!; y Gigi tocaba la batería en el grupo de hardcore/punk The Mohawks.

En octubre de 2016, Scandal usaron la plataforma Bandcamp para dar a conocer su primer EP en tierras británicas: Back In Town. En realidad, ellos mismos admiten que no fue más que una demo para presentarse en sociedad todavía como un trío ya que Andy Madway no había ingresado en la formación. Un total de cinco canciones que les ponían en el mapa londinense. Una escena que, en palabras de Vlad, les ha recibido «bien«. «La gente está interesada, tuvimos un buen feedback. Para una banda nueva en la ciudad puede ser un poco difícil conseguir conciertos ya que se necesita un poco de tiempo, pero estamos llegando a ello«, explica el bajista.

Tan sólo siete meses después, en abril de este 2017, ha llegado la nueva entrega de Scandal: Street Punk. Un EP en toda regla, que está grabado con mejor sonido y bajo el formato de cuarteto. Cinco temas aunque dos de ellos ya los habíamos escuchado en Back In Town: «Need to Learn» y «It’s Just Punk Rock«. Según nos comenta Vlad, los planes de Scandal para este 2017 será la publicación de su primer larga duración después del verano. En un principio el disco debería estar en la calle entre los últimos días de septiembre y los primeros de octubre. Un disco que será lanzado antes de que el cuarteto marche a la Europa del Este para realizar una pequeña gira, cuyos detalles todavía están cerrándose.

Could you introduce the band? Could you give a brief introduction to the band and how Scandal was formed?

Scandal is a streetpunk band formed in 1998 by Vlad, Gabi, Crima and Dinu , in the city of Bacau -Romania . Beeing really young punks back then , we were always into trouble , lots of booze, fights and authorities problems. This is why we were called “Scandal”.

I think the band was formed in Romania, but now you’ve moved to London, right?

Yes, we moved a few years back.

Did you move to London for work or to start a career with the band?

Initially for work. Before we left Romania, Scandal was on a break ..so we were’t sure when and if we will play again together. Somehow we manage to put the band on tracks again. Best decision ever

Does the group have the same members or have you changed the formation in London?

The group has two original members, Gabi on vocals and Vlad on bassguitar. Gigi is our second drummer he joined the band more than 10 years ago in Romania and he played with us a lot before we moved to the UK. Andy Madway is our new guitarist he is from Greece.

Did you (or your bandmates) play in any previous band?

Gabi used to play a bit with Terror Art, romanian best punk-new wave band ever.Vlad used to play with Manifest! -an Oi! project; Gigi used to play with The Mohawks a really cool hcpunk young band from Romania and Andy used to play with Omixlh -legendary greek streetpunk band-, with Bootstroke, Madway and he was in a few other greek projects

Are you (or your bandmates) currently playing in another band? Any side-projects?

Not at the moment.

Did Scandal release any album or EP in Romania?

Yes , we have released Live in Beci, in 2001, poor quality live album, and our first studio album, Resturi din Punkomat, in 2003.

What could you tell me about the street punk in Romania?

I’m afraid that I can’t tell you to many good things ). It had a good start when we were there and we were putting up shows but at the moment the scene in Romania looks almost dead .

In those days in Romania, did you play any gigs abroad? Where?

Yes, we played in Bulgaria as we had a close friendship with Bulgarian punks and skins. Really good times.

Do you find many differences between street punk scene in London and Romania?

Street punk scene in London is on the rise like everywhere, but in Romania is dying…Thats the main difference.

For a foreign band like Scandal, is it hard to playing gigs and get a place inside the London’s street punk scene or it’s the same for a local band?

I guess is the same as for a local band…Almost every band around has a foreign member or more..People doesn’t really make a difference this days

How the London’s street punk scene has welcomed you?

Good, people are interested ,we had a good feedback. It can be a bit hard as we are new gang in town here, so it takes a bit of time to get more gigs , but we are getting there.

In your music, I can hear elements of UK and US bands. What are the band main influences?

We have influences from early 70’s British punkrock to 90’s american punk. Bands like The Vibrators , Social Distortion , Cock Sparrer, The Business , Rancid or Oxymoron.

You have released 2 E.Ps in the last six months, are there any plans to release a full length album?

Our full length album will be released by the end of September 2017.

Do you prefer EPs (7” format) or long play (10 or 12” format)?

I guess for the full album will be a long play plus cd’s.

Any plans for touring in Europe or only UK at this moment?

We have a plan to tour in Eastern Europe this autumn but we still have to fix some issues. We are open to play anywhere in Europe and UK.

How does a ‘cockney’ Rumanian citizen (like you) feel with the Brexit? What are your thoughts about this?

Some people are worried. They are afraid that things will change and not in a good way for immigrants..maybe more taxes I’ll say. But we are used with this shit, my generation has a history of changes from an ex-communist country to this so called democracy we were pushed around in their bullshit politics… So we have learn the lesson..never trust the politician!

Have you realised a change in the attitude of the British population towards foreigners after Brexit?

Not really.The majority of British population are cool people. Even most of the people who voted for Brexit are not anti emigration, they are more anti UE politics. Obviously there is and alway has been people who don’t really like us to be here…We just have to deal with them in a way or another.
