Desde mediados de noviembre está disponible el nuevo EP de Lion’s Law, titulado Cut The Rope, publicado por Pirates Press y HFMN Crew, y cuya reseña publicamos hace unos días. Con motivo de su nuevo 7″, que anticipa su próximo disco, y de su inminente gira peninsular, con conciertos en Zaragoza, Castellón, Oñati y Madrid (show exclusivo junto a Madball), contactamos con ellos y su cantante, Wattie, nos ha respondido. 

Hace un par de semanas fue publicado vuestro nuevo EP, Cut The Rope. En Internet he podido leer opiniones sobre que ahora el grupo suena más «hardcore». ¿Qué os parece?

Bueno, serás el primero en escuchar la verdadera historia, pero de todos modos no pienso que nuestro sonido haya cambiado, siempre se hizo más y más duro. Solo hay que escuchar nuestro primer EP y luego nuestro álbum From the Storm.

De todos modos, ya habíamos grabamos algunas canciones para nuestro próximo álbum, que saldrá en 2020, cuando el cantante de Terror contactó con nosotros para ir de gira con ellos. Queríamos lanzar un EP para celebrarlo y esa canción, «Get It All», suena más hardcore que el resto por lo que era perfecta para el 7″. ¡Lion’s Law siguen siendo Lion’s Law!

¿Crees que las dos últimas canciones, sobre todo «Get It All» son las más rápidas y duras que Lion’s Law han escrito hasta ahora?

No, creo que canciones como ‘With The Wolves’, ‘1000 eyes’ o ‘Our Generation’ de nuestros lanzamientos anteriores son aún más rápidas.

En 2020 se publicará su nuevo LP, ¿el álbum sigue la línea y el sonido de las canciones del nuevo EP?

Será potente, pero será una mezcla de los himnos que hicimos antes con grandes coros y canciones más duras como ‘Get It All’, pero por el momento esta es casi la única canción «hardcore» que hemos grabado.

¿Qué habéis hecho diferente en el nuevo álbum? ¿Qué pueden esperar vuestros seguidores?

Lo vamos a grabar en Catalunya, en el mismo estudio que CRIM grabó Pare nostre questeu al infern, porque realmente nos encantó el sonido. Está muy bien producido pero lleno de rabia. 

¿Qué sellos van a lanzar el álbum?

Trabajaremos con HFMN en Europa y Pirates Press en los Estados Unidos.

Recientemente habéis estado de gira junto a Terror y Death Before Dishonor, en Madrid vais a tocar junto a Madball, ¿cómo ha recibido la escena hardcore a una banda skinhead como Lion’s Law?

Como dije antes, Terror nos contactó para salir de gira con ellos, eso prueba que a parte de la escena le gusta nuestro sonido. Por supuesto, no todos los seguidores de Terror nos conocían, les sorprendió, fue una grata sorpresa. 

Estoy seguro de que esperan a un grupo de oi! cantando sobre beber cerveza y gritando «oi, oi, oi», pero se sorprendieron al ver a una banda que de hecho puede tocar y tocar duro. 

Lion’s Law ha tocado en muchos países y en diferentes continentes, ¿qué público te ha sorprendido más?

¡Debo decir que lo pasamos muy bien en Colombia y Singapur, público loco pero buenas personas! ¡Se emocionan al ver bandas europeas! Espero que volvamos pronto!

¿Cuál es el lugar más extraño que has tocado con Lion’s Law u otra banda?

Déjame pensar… Tocamos en un montón de lugares extraños con Rixe, hubo un concierto en Boston en la sala de calderas de un estacionamiento subterráneo, con un piso compuesto exclusivamente por latas de cerveza vacías … ¡cómodo!

A lo largo de los años de Francia han salido muchos grupos oi! de alta calidad. bandas. ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre el estado actual de la escena francesa de oi!?

La gente puede pensar que la escena francesa de oi! está muy bien hoy en día, pero tenemos una pequeña comunidad en comparación con otros países europeos, creo que tenemos muchos activistas  del oi! haciendo shows, zines y bandas.

Con respecto a las bandas, ¡todos volvieron a lo fundamental del oi! de los años 80s! Buscando en el pasado su sonido, ¡por eso es bueno! 

En los últimos años se habla mucho sobre de las bandas francesas de Oi! ¿Por qué crees que esto está sucediendo?

¡Exactamente por lo que dije antes! Con algunas bandas francesas actuales de oi!, la gente escuchó por primera vez las bandas de la época de ‘Chaos in France‘ y se dieron cuenta de lo buenas que eran.

La mayoría de las bandas francesas también cantan en francés, pero Lion’s Law lo hace en inglés. ¿Por qué cantas en inglés? ¿Encuentras dificultades para escribir / expresarte en un idioma diferente?

Comenzamos Lion’s Law porque todos estábamos haciendo otras bandas en francés y queríamos enviar nuestro mensaje fuera de Francia, ¡por eso empezamos a escribir en inglés! Creo que es más fácil escribir en inglés porque en francés puedes parecer tonto muy rápidamente  … El idioma francés es más difícil de trabajar que el inglés. 

¿Cuál es el estado de salud de la escena skinhead en París? En el pasado muchos problemas con boneheads, ¿ha cambiado esto?

Todo esto ha cambiado en los últimos años. Después del asesinato del activista de antifa Clement Meric, los boneheads desaparecieron en París o se mudaron a ciudades en el norte de Francia. Desde entonces la escena no hay problemas.

¿Qué importancia tienen los asuntos políticos para ti y el grupo, especialmente tras el aumento del poder en Europa por parte de los partidos de ultraderecha?

Siempre hemos estado implicados en el antirracismo y Europa va a pasar tiempos difíciles con esto, seguro, espero que el Frente Nacional nunca gane las elecciones … eso sería dramático.

¿Qué tienen Lion’s Law preparado para el próximo 2020?

¡Lanzaremos nuestro nuevo álbum en abril de 2020, después de eso tendremos muchos shows y giras! Y estoy bastante seguro de que así sucederá (ya estamos trabajando en algunas cosas importantes).

Y con Rixe, Bromure, Atlantes, Faction S,… ¿qué hay planeado?

Digamos que Rixe todavía va a tocar algunos shows (Madrid y EH en enero para ustedes) pero ya no van a grabar. 

Bromure grabó una 7″ compartido junto con Squelette y haremos una gira juntos por Europa en febrero y marzo.

Atlantes puede grabar algunas canciones nuevas pronto … Y Faction S grabará un 7″a principios de diciembre, nuestros compañeros de Portugal, Combate Brutal volverán a lanzar nuestra Demo en vinilo y vamos a lanzar un split con Concrete Elite de Estados Unidos !!

¡Muchas cosas!

Hace poco descubrí que Wattie y otros skinheads aparecen en un vídeo musical de Beyoncé, ¿cómo surgió esta oportunidad?

Habíamos aparecido en algunas películas francesas como skinheads (figurantes) en algunas ocasiones, las agencias de casting tienen mi número de teléfono y me llaman siempre que están buscando algún skinhead tradicional auténtico. Un día me llamaron pero la confidencialidad era tan alta que no me podían decir para quién era. Sólo me dijeron que estaba muy muy bien pagado (800$ el día). El día de la grabación supimos que era Beyoncé. Mentiría si te dijera que no dudamos, pero fue divertido y todo el mundo necesitaba el dinero.

¿Te gustaría añadir algo más?

A couple of weeks ago your new EP has been released, I have read opinions on the Internet that your sound is more «hardcore», what do you think about these opinions?

Well you’re gonna be the first to hear the real story but anyway i don’t think our sound had changed , it always got tougher and tougher. Just listen to our first EP and then to our album From the Storm , clearly a hardening all the way.

Anyway we already recorded few songs for our next album , to be out in 2020 , and then Terror‘s singer contacted us to join them on tour, so of course we wanted to release an EP to celebrate that tour and that song «Get It All» , that sounds more hardcore than the rest was perfect for the 7″ !! So rejoice, Lion’s Law is still Lion’s Law !

Do you think the last two songs are the fastest and hardest that Lion’s Law have ever written?

No, i think song like ‘With The Wolves‘, ‘1000 eyes‘ or «Our Generation‘ from our previous releases are even faster !!! 

In 2020 your new LP is going to be published, does the album follow the way/sound of the songs of the new EP?

It will definitely be hard but it’ll be a mix of anthems as we did before with big choirs and singalongs and songs harder like ‘Get It All» , but for the moment this is nearly the only «hardcore» song we grabbed.

What have you done differently on the new album? What can your fans expect?

We’re gonna record it in Catalunya , at the same studio as CRIM recorded «Pare nostre questeu al infern’ because we really loved the sound of it . So , well produced but full of rage !!!

What labels are going to release the album?

We’ll be working with HFMN in Europe and Pirates Press in the States !

Recently you have toured with Terror and Death Before Dishonor, in Madrid you are going to play with Madball, how does the hardcore scene welcome a skinhead band like Lion’s Law?

As i said before , it’s Terror that invited us to tour with them , so that’s a proof that a part of the hardcore scene likes our sound. Of course not all of Terror’s crowd knew us but i gotta say they were surprised , a pretty good surprise !!

I’m sure they were awaiting for an oi! band singing about drinking beer and oioioi but they were surprised of seeing a band that can actually play , and play hard.

Lion’s Law have played in many countries and continents, which audience have surprised you the most?

I gotta say that we all had a really really nice time in Colombia and in Singapore , crazy crowds but good people !! Just really excited to see European bands ! Hope we’ll go back there soon ! 

What is the weirdest place you’ve played with Lion’s Law or another band?

Let me think….. we played a lot of weird places but with Rixe we played the boiler room of an underground parking place in Boston , with a floor composed only with empty beer cans.. .confortable !!!!

Throughout the years France delived some high quality Oi! bands. What is your opinion about the current state of the french Oi! scene? 

People may think that French Oi! scene is doing really good nowadays but we still have a small crowd compared with other European countries, i think we just have a lot of Oi! activists doing shows, zines, and bands . and concerning the bands , everybody went back to the fundamental of French 80’s oi! , looking in the past for their sound , that’s why it’s good ! What can beat ‘Chaos en France‘ sound?

In recent years there is much talk about the French Oi! bands. Why do you think this is happening?

Exactly because of what i said before , with some of the current french oi! bands , people listened to the first time to all the ‘Chaos en France‘ bands and realised how good it is !!!

Most French bands also sing in French. Why do you sing in English and do you find difficulties in writting/expressing yourself in a different language?

We started Lion’s Law because we were all doing other bands in French and we wanted our message to spread wider than France so that’s why we started writing in English ! I think it’s easier to write in English because in French it quickly sounds really dumb … The French language is really precious and hard to manipulate.

What is the health status of the skinhead scene in Paris? In the past there were a lot of troubles with boneheads, has this changed?

All of this has changed a lot since the last few years. After the murdering of Antifa activist Clement Meric, boneheads disappeared in Paris or moved to cities in the north of France. So the scene is way cleaner and troubleless.

How important are political issues for you, especially since the power of right-wing parties in Europe is increasing again?

We’ve always been implicated in antiracism and Europe is going through tough times that’s for sure , i personnaly hope France never let National Front win the elections… that would be dramatic.

What’s lined up for 2020?

As we’ll release our new album in April 2020 , after that we hope a lot of shows and touring !!! And i’m pretty sure it’ll happen (we’re already working on some big stuff).

Bromure/Rixe/Atlantes/Faction S – what’s happening?

Let’s say Rixe is still playing a few shows (Madrid and EH in january for you guys) but not recording anymore.

Bromure recorded a split 7′ together with Squelette and we’re doing a tour together in Europe on February/March .

Atlantes may record some new songs soon …. And Faction S is grabbing a 7″ early december , our mates from Portugal, Combate Brutal are gonna re-release our demo in vinyl. And we’re gonna release a split 7″ with Concrete Elite from the US !!

So lots of stuff !!!

Wattie and other skinheads appeared in a Beyoncé music video, how did this opportunity come about?

Well , we’ve been acting in French movies as skinheads (like figurating) a few times before that , so the casting agencies had my number and everytime they were looking for real traditional black/white skinheads they’d call me.

One day they called me but confidentiality was that high that they couldn’t say who it was for. They just told me it was a really really good pay (800€ a day). And on the day of filming we learned it was Beyonce. I’d lie if i’d say we didn’t hesitate but hey…it was fun and everybody needed money. so fuck it!
